GRADUATE 485
Once you have completed 2 years study in Australia on a student visa, you are eligible for a 485 visa.
There are 2 streams available in the Graduate 485 visa.
If you have studied Certificate III, IV or Diploma level, then apply for 485 GRADUATE STREAM
If you have studied BACHELOR or MASTERS, then apply for 485 POST-STUDY WORK STREAM.
Changes from 1 July 2024
- The Graduate Stream will change its name to the Post-Vocational Education Work Stream
- The Post-Study Work Stream will change its name to Post-Higher Education Work Stream
- If you have a trade qualification, diploma or associated degree you must apply for Post-Vocational Education Work Stream
- The qualification that meets the Australian Study Requirement will determine which 485 stream you apply for. Your other qualifications will not be considered in determining your eligibility for the 485 visa
- The qualification must be closely related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List
- If the qualification is a degree or higher, apply for Post-Higher Education Work Stream
- Age Change – Both 485 streams will have a maximum age restriction of 35 years old. That means to apply for the 485 under any stream you must be 35 years or under at the time of application. Hong Kong and British National Overseas Passport Holders will still be able to apply for 485 if they are under 50 years.
- Hong Kong and British National Overseas citizens might be able to stay for 5 years
- Indian citizens – stay period for 485 will be:
- Bachelors (including honours) – 2 years
- Bachelors (First Class Honours in STEM, including ICT – 3 years
- Masters (coursework, extended and research) – 3 years
- PHD – 4 years
485 GRADUATE STREAM
The graduate stream is available for students who have completed 2 years of study at Certificate III, IV or Diploma level in Australia.
This visa is for 1.5 years and has full study rights and work rights. You must choose an occupation that is on the MLTSSL when applying for this stream.
Eligibility criteria:
- You must have completed the course in the last 6 months
- You were physically in Australia for at least 16 calendar months while completing the study
- The study was at least 2 years (92 weeks)
- you held a student visa in Australia
- Apply for a provisional 485 skills assessment in the occupation. You must provide proof that you have applied this skills assessment at time of lodging 485 visa. You just need to provide a receipt; your skills assessment does not have to completed at time of lodging 485 visa

- Australian Federal Police Check
- Must have held student visa in last 6 months. (you can apply for 485 if you hold a BVA or BVB and you held student visa in last 6 months)
- English requirement: Have passport and are a citizen of USA, UK, NZ, Ireland or Canada OR
| International English Language Testing System (IELTS) | Overall 6.5 with minimum 5.5 in each of the 4 bands |
| Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT) | Total score 83 with minimum 7 in listening, 8 in reading, 18 in writing and 16 in speaking |
| Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) | Overall 57 with minimum 43 in listening, 48 in reading, 42 in speaking and 51 in writing |
| Occupational English Test (OET) | Minimum B in 4 each of the 4 bands |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced test | Overall 176 with a minimum of 162 in each of the 4 bands |
485 POST-STUDY STREAM
The post-study stream is available for students who have completed 2 years of study at a minimum bachelor’s or master’s level in Australia.
This visa is for 2 years and has full study rights and work rights. If you have done Masters by Research, then you get 485 for 3 years. If you have done PHD, then you get 485 for 3 years.
Eligibility criteria:
- You must have completed the course in the last 6 months
- You were physically in Australia for at least 16 calendar months while completing the study
- The study was at least 2 years (92 weeks)
- you held a student visa in Australia
