Australian Study Requirement for Australian Visas

If you plan to apply for certain Australian visas, you may need to meet the Australian study requirement. This requirement applies to visas such as:

  • Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485)
  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – Points-tested stream
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

What is the Australian Study Requirement?

You must complete either:

  • One eligible qualification that requires at least 2 academic years of study, or
  • Multiple eligible qualifications that together require at least 2 academic years of study.

Your study must also meet the following requirements:

  • You must complete the study in Australia.
  • Your study must take at least 16 calendar months.
  • You must hold an appropriate study visa while completing the course.
  • The course must lead to an eligible qualification.
  • The course must have registration on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).
  • You must complete the course with instruction in English.

Additional Requirement for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

For the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), you must complete the required Australian study within the 6 months immediately before you submit your visa application.
