Recognition of Prior Learning, also known as RPL, is where a person can obtain a qualification (Certificate II, III, IV, Diploma etc) based on their work experience in a particular field. It is commonly used for trade occupations such as construction or hospitality; but is also available for many other industries and occupations.
For example, a person with many years of experience in the Construction industry can successfully obtain a Certificate III in Carpentry once their skills and work experience have been assessed by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
Now you might be thinking, does RPL sound too good to be true? Is it legal, that a person can obtain a qualification (Certificate II, III, IV, Diploma etc) based on their work experience in a particular field without studying??
The short answer to this question is YES it is LEGAL, LAWFUL, and is recognised by the Australian Government. The process to obtain a qualification goes through a stringent and due process that assesses a person’s work experience to see if they have the requisite skills that match the units of competency of the qualification. Furthermore, the assessor is given a licence by the Australian Government which lawfully allows them to conduct the assessment and to award the qualification; which are known as Registered Training Organisations (RTO).
