How to Get your Invitation for Subclass 189 visa, Subclass 190 visa and Subclass 491 visa
Skills Assessment
You need to have a positive skills assessment at the time you receive the invitation. The skills assessment must be within the last 3 years before the date of invitation.
Submit an Expression of Interest
An Expression of Interest needs to be submitted through SkillSelect. This is basically where you are adding yourself to a pool of applicants and where you wait to receive an invitation for a Subclass 189, 190 or 491 visa.

Once invited you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa.
To get an invitation for Subclass 189 visa, Subclass 190 visa and Subclass 491 visa in Australia, you have to understand how it works. Here’s a breakdown of how you can achieve the highest points to get an invitation:
1. Age (Maximum 30 Points)
- If you are between 25 and 32 years old you get 30 points
- If you are 18-24 and 33-39 you get 25 points
- If you are 40-45, you get 15 points
2. English Language Proficiency (Maximum 20 Points)
- Always give Pearson Test of English (PTE) test as it is the easiest to score the HIGHEST marks.
- At least 65 in each of the 4 test components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) in PTE will give you 10 points
- At least 79 in each of the 4 test components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) in PTE will give you 10 points
3. Skilled Employment (Maximum 15 Points) (should be in nominated occupation and in the last 10 years)
- Points are given for skilled work experience both inside and outside Australia:
Outside Australia
- 3-5 years overseas: 5 points
- 5-8 years overseas: 10 points
- 8+ years overseas: 15 points
Inside Australia
- 1-3 years in Australia: 5 points
- 3-5 years in Australia: 10 points
- 5-8 years in Australia: 15 points
- 8 years in Australia: 20 points
4. Education (Maximum 20 Points)
- Doctorate (PHD): 20 points.
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s: 15 points.
- Australian qualification in a trade or diploma: 10 points.
- Specialist Qualification that is Masters degree by Research or Doctorate from Australian educational institution that is at least 2 academic years in specified information and communication technology (ICT) fields, mathematics, engineering, science or technology gives 10 points
5. Australian Study Requirement (5 Points)
- Completing a degree, diploma or trade qualification from an Australian institution for at least two academic years gives you 5 points.
6. Regional Study
- Studying in a designated regional area of Australia for at least two academic years adds another 5 points. This can be particularly beneficial for those applying for the 491 visa.
7. Professional Year Program (5 Points)
- Completing a Professional Year Program in fields such as IT, accounting, or engineering gives 5 points. Professional Year is a structured professional development program that has formal learning and workplace experience in Australia.
8. Overseas Language Course (5 Points)
- Passing a test that is about communicating at a community level between English and another language with NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) gives you 5 points.
9. State Nomination (190 and 491)
- For the 190 visa (State Sponsorship), you receive 5 points from the nomination.
- For the 491 visa (Regional Sponsorship), you receive 15 points from the regional nomination.
10. Partner Skills (Up to 10 Points)
- If your partner:
- has a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the same occupation list as your occupation and
- has competent English (IELTS 6, PTE 50) and
- is under 45 years old
then you can get 10 points
- If your partner has only competent English (IELTS 6, PTE 50), you receive 5 points.
- Single applicants or those with a partner who is an Australian citizen or PR also get 10 points.
