📢 Commentary and Policy Analysis – Important Update on Student Visa Applications for Temporary Visa Holders in Australia
Clare O’Neill has announced a significant change to Australia’s visa policy. Starting from 1 July 2024, holders of the following visas will no longer be able to apply for a Student visa while in Australia:
- Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate)
- Subclass 600 (Visitor)
- Subclass 601 (Electronic Travel Authority)
- Subclass 602 (Medical Treatment)
- Subclass 651 (eVisitor)
- Subclass 771 (Transit)
- Subclass 988 (Maritime Crew)
- Subclass 995 (Diplomatic Temporary) – primary visa holders only
- Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations)) – Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) stream
- Subclass 426 (Domestic Worker (Temporary) – Diplomatic or Consular)
This move aims to address the current oversupply of migrants onshore, a situation exacerbated by the introduction of the COVID-19 408 visa during the pandemic. This visa was created as a response to the lack of support for international students, a decision that tarnished Australia’s reputation compared to countries like Canada, which provided robust support to their international student communities.
The Labor government, needing votes and seeking to control immigration numbers, has implemented this policy change. While it may temporarily manage the migrant oversupply, there is a risk that Australia could once again lose its appeal as a top destination for international students and immigrants, reminiscent of the fallout from the Morrison era.
Then like in COVID-19 when Scott Morrison was in power and did not give help to international students here and then Australia got a bad name as compared to Canada helping their students during COVID-19. As a response, Australia introduced COVID-19 408 visa which led to this over supply of migrants onshore. Right now the Labor Government needs votes and wants to curtail immigration to bring back numbers under control.
Australia may lose its international attractiveness as a destination for immigration just like it did when it did not support students during the Morrison era. So this measure may be temporary to fix the excess supply and my prediction is that Australia may lose its reputation or attractiveness as an Immigration destination so I don’t believe this will stay for long. But who knows let’s see what the future holds
